The meeting began with Natalie Williams bringing attention to the need for more guidance counselors. She wanted the board to take whatever actions were necessary to hire more school counselors. Ken Hoover then asked if any school administrators had requested additional counselors. He said, he would like to have some input from the principals before making that decision because they might have other funding priorities.
The board then turned its attention to "stop loss coverage" which is an insurance policy that will limit the amount of money the district will have to pay from its self funded reserves for catastrophic or excessive claims. The two bidders were HMIG and American Fidelity. The board will decide which company and the amount of policy coverage at its next business meeting.
Only one company responded to GMSD's bid for a food services provider and that was aramark. Students will begin to see changes in their cafeterias after Fall Break. The initial focus will be on Houston High School where the school district has seen its greatest revenue loss.
Despite switching to a private provider, GMSD is still projecting a cafeteria deficit this year. aramark expects a 3% growth in sales and will guarantee cafeteria losses to be no more than $66,751 which is better than last year.

A Last Minute Question...
Just before the meeting ended, Mark Dely asked Superintendent Manuel if there is a Social Media policy for the district. He said he looked and couldn't find one. The discussion focused on how the policy relates to staff. Dely said he went looking for the policy because of comments he had seen on FaceBook. Manuel said that although the policy is a bit vague, there is one in the section on Ethics. You can read that policy right here.
With the conclusion of that discussion, the meeting was adjourned. Next meeting is scheduled for August 19th.
